Shinnenkai - New Year's Party - January 2005
JETS members held our annual Shinnenkai at the San Francisco Zen Center once again. Club members, friends and guests enjoyed a terrific party with delicious food and plenty of drink. Members caught up with old friends (and introduced new partners and newborn family members) and made many new friends. Laughing at the humor of the speeches and the silliness of the group games and activities, JETS Shinnenkai 2005 was another big hit. View all the photos at Ofoto.com. Login required.

WATER BALLON TOSS contest: be very very careful...or YOUR PARTNER may get very very wet.

Pangui race...with Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Harder than at first it may appear.

With the LIMBO...it's all about the neck.

Sunshine, good food, and good friends...make for a very great time.

O-Hanami Picnic in Golden Gate Park - March 2004
JETS members held their first annual cherry blossom picnic outside the West gate of the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park on Saturday March 27, 2004. Members enjoyed some terrific homemade dishes: yakitori, inarizushi, o-musubi, pasta salad, yakiniku, korean-style bbq, pizza, cheesecake, ichigo-mochi and many many other delicious snacks and refreshments (beer, wine, and champagne were popular as well).
Even baby Niki-chan is enjoying the good food, good cheer and good weather.
"Shigatsu wa hanami de sake ga nomeru zo! Sake ga nomeru, nomeru zo!...sake ga nomeru zo!!"
Oiishisohna tabemono ga ippai! Iiiiiiitadakimaaaaaaasu!

JETS members arrive early to secure the best location under the cherry blossoms. Baby Neyalla guards the brewskis in the cooler.
Shinnenkai at SF Zen Center- January 2004
JETS just may have started a new tradition by holding this year a Shinnenkai (New Year's Party) -- instead of its annual Bonenkai (Year-end Party). This year's party was very well attended. Guests enjoyed terrific food, came up with some very creative Senryu during the Haiku Contest and everyone left with some really great gifts (some gag gifts!) during the White Elephant Gift Exchange.
Click to view this year's haiku - first is last, last is first.

Shinnenkai guests seated smiling as another great White Elephant Gift Exchange present is opened.

Jim leads the Senryu contest. Teams of 4-5 guests had to construct haikus in traditional 5-7-5 format by incorporating English, Japanese and scathing political and/or social commentary.

Teams huddle to compose their Senryu.

Is this the winning Haiku??

At JETS one thing we learn for sure...presentation is key.

I wonder what's inside??

Nijikai at Capital Restaurant - October 2000.
After each meeting, members gather at a nearby chinese food restaurant to eat and socialize. Ordering is usually 'chinese-style' allowing each member to sample one of half a dozen or more different delicious dishes. The bill is rarely more than $10 per person (tax and tip included; alcoholic beverages are billed separately).

JETS members enjoy tea and light-hearted conversation as they await the mini-banquet at Capital restaurant. Former JETS President Ted Stonecliffe is in the left foreground.

JETS President Meg Gamble (center left) and Vice President of Education Yuki Baba (center right) engage a JETS guest in conversation.

Summer BBQ Party - July 2003
Our Summer Party was held in the East Bay this year. The sun was shining bright, the sky was blue...and it was a perfect day for...a water balloon toss and tasty barbecue.

You can read the question on her lips: "tabemasenka?"

Ian and Norimasa enjoy the fruits of the grill.

Ako is happy to have so many chubby-cheeked babies to hug and hold.

Vice President of Public Relations Ed Gallagher and daughter Neyalla are happy to see so many people enjoying the party.

Robert, Naru and Yuki appear to be having a serious discussion about the current state of the Japanese economy.

Club Treasurer Ted Mackay is happy because the record attendance means that the party is a financial success.

Mark, as JETS Club Co-founder, is happy to see that the experimental bilingual Toastmasters club he helped to start in the late 1980s is still going strong after nearly 15 years.

Ted and Maxime (in hat and pony tails) have their minds on more pressing issues...like how to catch those big wet water-filled balloons coming their way...

It's all in the wrists...or not.

What are those crazy big people doing?!?

Is that drool on her chin? You're certainly welcome to have some...at JETS Summer BBQ 2023!!
